Indira Cherchio: I have gained significant weight in a short time in only my stomach and thighs and a tiny bit in the breasts, not my arms or face. I don’t seem to have symptoms of pregnancy, my blood work for thyroid and diabetes came back fine in April. My stomach is what’s bothering me most its like a giant ball. My diet has not changed. What causes the stomach to bloat out like this?

Berry Kawell: There are 3 possibilities -
1. Internal organ expansion – when your organ is weak ( overworked or malnuitrition etc), you tempt to reproduce more cells on that organ. That is why when people see big upper-stomach, this may refer to weak-liver. This happens to most of young and mid age adults. Provided, you can not pick the fat tissues from your skin on the tommy.

2. Lymph system malfunction – you see lots of fat gained by picking skins around fatty areas. if you can pick at lot of fat under the skin, you need to enhance your lymphtic nodes around the area so that your macrophages can be reproduced well to “eat” the fat cells.

3. Oedema -water in the tissue. Rarely happened. If you find your water accumulated in that area, your tummy will “change shape”, like, moving distantly from one side to the other.

If I feel around it seems like something is there but I don’t know if it’s cartilage, my diagphram or what. I’ve been on Nexium for 4 months, had an endoscopy that came back normal.
Velvet Cholico: Don’t worry about your spelling… you asked a good question.

Sometimes (but not all the time) when you have a cyst on your ovaries, the inside of your abdomen get inflamed and irritated. This can cause the abdomen to swell, which is the bloating you’re describing. Also, if the cyst is large enough it’s actually taking up space in the abdomen that is shared with many other organs. It really just kind of makes everything a little “out of whack.” A cyst can also have some impact on your hormones, which can cause fluid retention and bloating.

Just some other words of advice, make sure your friend knows how important it is that she sees a doctor and is treated. The symptoms you describe are potentially very serious, and can also be a symptom of ovarian cancer, not just fluid filled ovarian cysts.

Ilona Papalia: Sometimes people have intollerances to certain types of food, such as lactose or gluiten, which results in bloating. It may be worthwhile taking note of when you are bloated more and what you have eaten before hand. Alternitively gas can cause bloating, as well as digestion problems and bacteria. There are many products on the market that can reduce this such as degas. Also products that contain Acidophilus (good bacteria) such as yoghut.

Jenni Prasser: for just over 3 months ive had a bloated belly. I wake up bloated, and go to bed bloated.

Ive had no pain..no nothing.
I eat plenty of water..its all I actually drink throughout the day. I eat fuit & veg also.

Ive taken 3 pregnancy tests that came back negative and also had swabs done to make sure everything was okay, for STIs and Im all clear.

my periods have changed a slight bit though, ive had them for 8 years and ive only just started getting brown discharge and a bit of bright red spotting right before my period. and also last month it was very light. (Im used to them being very heavy) these only started changing when the bloatedness came about.
my stomach also tends to get harder when I eat..

what could this be?

Betsy Haine: I think you can rule out pregnancy, especially if you’ve had a negative test in the last month, or any test from a doctor’s office.

The usual cause of bloating is gas – and it usually starts with diet. High fiber foods (including fruits and vegetables) as well as high fat foods (like a rich restaurant meal) both are big causes of bloating. If your digestive system is sensitive, you might be burping, or having gas or ‘grumbles’ in your abdomen. If not, it might be something else.

You might try keeping a food diary. Keep track of what you eat, and how much you eat. This may help identify the foods that cause your bloating. Also track your exercise – how does walking or running help the bloating over the next 24 hours? You can also try eating a ‘clear diet’ for a day – nothing but water, clear juice, and broth. If that helps, try adding foods back one at a time to find out what’s bugging you.

If you are 18-25, there are two things that may be factors. As you grow into adulthood, many people get lactose intolerant. Keeping a food diary may help you find this out.

Another thing is that people in that age range sometimes put on a little weight. Your pictures show you are thin, but the pictures aren’t really clear enough for me to tell whether your stomach is bloated, or you have posture issues, or are gaining weight. For example, how toned are your arms and legs compared to your waistline? Sometimes stress or hormones cause weight gain underneath the stomach muscles – causing a bloated belly, but the muscles feel tight.

To rule this out, keep track of your weight, and you body measurements. Bloating shouldn’t cause weight gain, or increase in your arms, legs, or hips. I don’t think that this is the case, you seem to eat pretty healthy, but it’s good to rule it out.

Sorry for the long post – but I hope this helps!
